Exams description:

1. Open Book Examination

NEBOSH and NEWHSE want our learners and partners to feel safe in their learning journey with NEBOSH qualifications, including attending a NEBOSH assessment. Therefore, NEBOSH is introducing an Open Book Examination that can be taken at home as a replacement for the invigilated paper-based examinations for Unit 1 of International General Certificates (IG1 & GC1). This will replace in-person closed book exams and enable learners to sit their NEBOSH assessment in their own home or another safe and suitable location.

What is an Open Book Examination?

A learner will be given 24 hours to research and complete the examination with full access to textbooks and digital resources when completing an open book examination. Open book examinations test your ability to extract and apply relevant knowledge and organise it to address the question asked.

What will the format of the open book examination be?

The open book assessment will begin by giving you a scenario. This will typically describe a realistic organisation or workplace with an outline of normal operational activities and worker behaviour. The scenario may go on to outline a developing situation, such as an incident or safety intervention. You may be asked to imagine that you hold a specific role, such as a safety manager, in the workplace described. You will be asked to carry out a series of tasks, which may be split into several sub-tasks.
After your open book examination, NEWHSE as a Learning Partner will contact you to undertake a closing interview. The purpose of the interview is to confirm that the work you have submitted is your own. The interview will be conducted via a video call, such as Zoom, Skype or FaceTime, so we can also confirm the learner’s identity. Each interview should last for 15 minutes.

Does it also apply for the re-sit of an old IGC1 exam (all our learners who studied till the end of 2019y)?

If you have not passed the IGC1 examinations or would like to re-sit IGC1 qualification, you will have to sit an Open Book Examination. Invigilated paper-based exam is no more applicable for this qualification.

Does it apply to IG2 exam (all our learners who studied from January 2020)?

No, IG2 remains as a practical Risk Assessment. No changes apply.

Does it apply for the GC2 and GC3 exams (all our learners who studied till the end of 2019)?

No, at this moment, it will be still old format - Invigilated paper-based exam, in our training centre at Grazyny st. Next exam is planned for 09 September, 2020. Further updates will be monitored, as NEBOSH is also looking at alternatives for those people ready to sit a GC2 exam.

When is the first Open Book Examination date?

The courses will be run as usual (look at the dates of the training schedule), however, the dates of our first Open Book Examination to be confirmed by the of July.

Future open book examination (OBE) dates

The next OBEs will take place on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 28 October 2020
    English language only
  • Wednesday 2 December 2020
IG1 and IGC1 available in English

These sittings are open to any learner planning to sit an NG1, NGC1, IG1 or IGC1 unit examination. Please refer to the NEBOSH website for full information.

But we do believe, that this new format of assessment will bring a lot of benefits to our learners, minimise the stress of sitting an exam in the class within given 2 hours per each exam and will help our learners to present their best skills in applying their knowledge into the real-case scenario and practices.

We are here to support and help you should you require any assistance.

2.  Practical assessment

The aim of this assessment is for you to practically apply the knowledge and understanding that you have gained from your studies. To do this, you will need to complete a risk assessment of your workplace based on the template that we will send you.
